    Something Sweet

My husband's car broke down yesterday and pretty much everything is broken.
We only have one car for lord knows how long and this morning was crazy and hectic.
My husband is a rusher - his alarm goes off blaring, he wakes up saying things like, "Let's do it" and "Get it done."
    Ugh.
Me, on the other hand, well, I love to ease into my morning.  I like to rise without an alarm, stretch a little, stare out the window, turn on the news, kiss the babies, anything that makes me feel like I have more control over my day.  Needless to say, naturally, this causes a great deal of snarky comments and annoyed stares during our morning routine. For the record, I think I have a much better approach to mornings.
Ultimately, it was kind of nice to have time with each other this morning.  I ate cherries with Isaiah in the car.  I tickled Wesley's feet.  Even the hubby and I made peace.  After we dropped the kids off, we got to flirt a little... you know, a little grown up talk, haha.

Nonetheless, I was still a little wound up when I got in - thinking about the car, the ridiculously LARGE pile of laundry in the basket at home and all the other things that need to be done.
Richard took my car so I was also a little irritated that I didn't have my car to escape at lunch.  I work in an office park - unlike when I worked in Manhattan or DC, there isn't much to escape to without a car.
I guess I should take this moment to confess, I am not the biggest fan of my job.
I won't complain because I am glad I am employed but...
I am not the biggest fan of my job.

Anyway, there is this lonely picnic table in my office park.  It's right by the parking lot under the trees.  It has a magnificent view of... well, the parking lot and the trees.  I swiped one of Isaiah's cinnamon apple sauces this morning and decided to think out the box and go sit on the bench and eat it.  I even took my favorite mead notebook in hopes that I could find the inspiration to write.  I've been nursing some serious block these days.  On my way to the bench, I tried to talk myself out of it.  It was just after noon and the 90 degree sun was beating down on my face.  No one else was at that lonely bench.  They knew better, right? Ultimately, I thought, I could either be very annoyed by the sun or feel warmed by it.  I decided to be warmed by it.  A little bit of a metaphor for life, right?  I sat down at the lonely bench and stretched by long legs out in front of me.  Every once and awhile a cool breeze would come along and tickle my arms and legs.  It was nice.
    Quiet.
    Sweet.
    A good kind of lonely...
I was reminded of how tough life can feel if you become consumed by that which you cannot change instead of just taking the time to make the best of what is in front of you.
Why is it so hard to remember that lesson?

Oh, and by the way, here is what I wrote:

I've memorized the swirls in your fingertips...
and I know how to touch them to match mine...
I've memorized the moles on your ear lobes
and depending on the shadows of the sunlight, I can tell time...

Then I started my grocery list.  Aye... I'm not Voltaire.. but I'm trying. :-)

*The picture above was taken at Wessie's birthday party this weekend.  We purchased a bubble machine.  Best. Investment. Ever.

My journals always have to-do lists and shopping lists mixed in among the poems and deep thoughts. :)

"Just taking the time to make the best of what's in front of you." THANK YOU. I needed that today..as a full time mommy & night shift nurse, I don't get a lot of sleep these days..& sometimes I definitely don't make the best of my situation. But honestly, I'm so blessed to be able to je home with my son during the day.

    Again, thank you :)

That's awesome! Thank you for the words, Meg. Don't be so hard on yourself - you have every right to be tired! Ah, the sacrifices of Mamas!
